Following the success of our St Mark’s Centre teaching building at the Bridgwater Centre, which featured exposed concrete coffered ceilings to help moderate the internal environment, the concept was adopted and developed in this new Health & Fitness Centre. Exposed concrete coffers provide thermal mass to regulate the internal temperature of the building and incorporate concealed extract ducts. These connect to chimneys which allowed the deep plan classrooms to benefit from natural ventilation, leading to a sustainable finished building.
The new teaching block provides 28 much needed general classrooms, purpose made teaching spaces for the Health, Beauty and Fitness courses (previously run from elderly temporary classrooms) and a café. The red brick used externally has a strong relationship to the main college buildings, but the large windows and over-sailing roof, along with the tensile canopy link to the rest of the College, give this building a more contemporary appearance.
