Planning permission has been granted for the UK’s first Steel Fixing Training Centre at Cannington, Somerset. This centre forms part of the Construction Skills and Innovation Centre, run by Bridgwater College and is the fourth in a series of highly specialised projects designed by DKA for the College. The Steel Fixing Training Centre answers a need increasing construction skills for the largest single trade at EDF Energy’s nuclear site, Hinkley Point C.
The training areas consist of a series of platforms, where courses have been designed around the needs of the Hinkley Tier 1 civil and building works contractors. In teams, trainees will construct steel cages to form beams, walls, columns and suspended slabs up to 12x12m suspended 2m above the ground. The platforms are staggered down the sloping site, surrounded by landscaped banks with a central access track. The centre will be operational by early summer 2014. Combined with the adjacent Construction Skills and Innovation Centre, also designed by DKA, Cannington will have a superb construction skills centre only a few miles from the rapidly developing Hinkley site.
