The Construction Trades building is a bespoke solution to unify all manner of construction site skills at Bridgwater College. The striking curved form houses a variety of teaching spaces for bricklaying, gas fitting, electricians’ booths, carpentry workshops and furniture making. The single extruded form has both double height spaces and two storey elements with classrooms accessible to their associated workshops below.
The building is joined to an existing Arts & Technology block, where further space was refurbished and a new Computer Lab created. A dedicated workshop for special needs students was provided.
The design provided a number of challenges; integrating rooflights into the curved roof form, large vehicle doors on inclined walls, collection of rainwater, controlling the acoustic environment and delivery of large steel members. The building has allowed pupils to excel, with a number attaining national student awards for bricklaying and cabinet making.
