DKA were appointed to design a new 9 classroom teaching block, secondary age, special needs facility at Fosse Way School, Radstock, following a successful design competition with Kier Construction.
The accommodation provides 8 general teaching rooms, 1 Science Room, Library, Media Room, Group Rooms and Quiet Rooms arranged around a central courtyard. The courtyard provides light and ventilation, but also creates a calming outlook for pupils who often find life stressful.
The mono-pitch roofs to the classrooms rise up to clerestory windows that flood the interior with daylight and also open to provide natural cross ventilation. Sweeping curved walls define the circulation, smooth the flow of people, and create an informal, relaxing environment.
