The first of four community hospitals designed by DKA for Somerset PCT, Frome Community Hospital was procured using the NHS Procure 21 process.
The new building replaces facilities in the existing outdated Victorian Hospital. Departments include a minor injury unit, therapies department, outpatients department, a renal satellite unit, X-ray and FM on ground floor, with administration, 28 bed inpatients ward and 6 bed birthing centre at first floor level. The patient environment was carefully considered in the design and most of the inpatient bedrooms enjoy views across the adjacent former show ground, ‘The Cheese Show Field’, and have large windows to maximise natural light.
Particular attention was paid to the environmental aspects of the design, and the building won ‘Highly Commended’ in the sustainability category of the Building Better Healthcare Awards. The client and design team were also winners of the South West Built Environment Integration and Collaborative Working award.
