Sheldon School commissioned DKA to design a pleasant, welcoming and stimulating new Refectory building to encourage more pupils to purchase their lunches on site.
The design incorporated a single open plan space with a steep mono-pitch roof. This enabled top lights to be provided to the north elevation and the raking roof line allows for extensive glazing to the external walls. This, combined with the opening roof lights flood the space with daylight throughout the year, with the glazing being complemented by the exposed glulam frame.
The internal colour scheme was developed in conjunction with the school, with the vibrant red paintwork and black floors complementing the timber and glass to provide a sophisticated interior finish.
