Birmingham Hospitals Modular Wards

Off-site modular ward construction resolves post covid-19 backlog

New modular wards to help clear the NHS backlog as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust required additional ward accommodation on two of their sites, at Heartlands Hospital in Bordesley Green and Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, to become operational within a short timescale. Due to the fast programme, modular construction was the ideal solution.

DKA have brought our healthcare experience and co-ordination expertise to the team helping both projects move from initial designs to sign-off in quick succession. Our design information was being used for construction in the factory within a few months of being involved in each project.

Working with The McAvoy Group, DKA led the design of the 2-storey modular wards located on each site, constructed in tandem. Each project provides two separate Inpatient wards of 24 bed spaces. Additionally, the wards provide ancillary support accommodation. Both modular buildings use standard modules and link into the surrounding buildings via bespoke connections.

As a result of the success of this project, we’ve gone on to help McAvoy bid for a number of other similar opportunities. These bids for other NHS Trusts put forward  similar solutions for both purchase and rental. DKA has a growing understanding of the benefits and challenges around modular construction, working to fixed area requirements and tying modular designs back into wider site infrastructure.
