Reuse of Heritage Asset to create new homes

This residential development repurposes the Grade II listed Arts & Crafts former hotel and public house, The Weston on Newbridge Road, Bath.

DKA secured listed building consent and planning for the conversion of the Weston into 8 no. apartments across 4 floors of accommodation including provision of part M4(2) accessible units. The scheme’s Heritage Statement looked at the history of the former Weston Hotel & Public House, identifying material from the Bath archive to uncover the building’s past and understand and evaluate the remaining historic fabric. The proposals were carefully developed to balance housing density, national space standards and the subdivision of the space in a historically sensitive manner, seeking to retain features and original openings. The technical resolution of the scheme was considered at an early stage to preserve the original ceiling cornicing and other key historic features, whilst addressing modern building standards and the acoustic challenges of living in an urban area on a busy road close to the hospital.
