Reuse of Heritage Asset to create new homes

This residential development repurposes the Grade II listed Arts & Crafts former hotel and public house, The Weston on Newbridge Road, Bath.

DKA secured listed building consent and planning for the conversion of the Weston into 8 no. apartments across 4 floors of accommodation including provision of part M4(2) accessible units. The scheme’s Heritage Statement looked at the history of the former Weston Hotel & Public House, identifying material from the Bath archive to uncover the building’s past and understand and evaluate the remaining historic fabric. The proposals were carefully developed to balance housing density, national space standards and the subdivision of the space in a historically sensitive manner, seeking to retain features and original openings. The technical resolution of the scheme was considered at an early stage to preserve the original ceiling cornicing and other key historic features, whilst addressing modern building standards and the acoustic challenges of living in an urban area on a busy road close to the hospital.

Hannah has worked across a range of sectors including a series of leisure projects involving close liaison with Historic England, Natural England and the LPA in a complex site contexts that has included Grade I registered parkland and a series of Grade I and II listed buildings. More recently she has been focused on working with a number of independent schools to develop their briefs and visions, delivering a series of projects including new classroom buildings, sports halls and the re-purposing of existing facilities.

Director

Founder and Director of DKA with experience in the design and construction of most building types, including healthcare, education, commercial, leisure and residential in both public and private sectors. Experienced in feasibility and urban design studies, David is responsible for running the design studio and retains a personal involvement with projects in the office in all stages of the design process, particularly at concept and sketch design stages.
